Lotto Max is one of three national lotteries in Canada. The lottery was launched in 2009 and is operated by the Interprovincial Lottery Corporation (ILC). The lottery corporation is jointly owned by five provincial lottery commissions and revenue generated from the national lottery is paid out proportionately to the different regions depending on ticket sales.
The national lottery replaced Lotto Super 7. Lotto Max is a 7/50 game that is drawn twice a week on Tuesdays and Fridays.
CA$ 5 buys you three sets of numbers. Each board includes two additional Quick Picks which is where the lottery terminal randomly generates lucky numbers for you. Players pick 7 numbers from a pool of 1 to 50 numbers. To win Lotto Max, players must match 7 out of the 7 draw numbers.
The Lotto Max jackpot starts at CA$ 10 million and if there is no lucky winner in a draw, the jackpot rolls over. The Canada Lotto Max jackpot is capped at CA$70 million. After the jackpot hits CA$ 50 million, additional drawings are held in an auxiliary account to fund the MaxMillions prizes. Each MaxMillions prize is CA$ 1 million each.
Other Lotto Max games
Other regions in Canada run similar versions to the Canada Lotto Max. Loto-Québec and Western Canada Lottery Corporation local versions of Lotto Max, including Québec Max and Western Max. The draws for these two lotteries are held on the same nights as Lotto Max which is every Tuesday and Friday.
The difference between Lotto Max and Québec Max and Western Max is the jackpot is fixed at CA$ 2 million. The latter two lotteries included additional drawings from a pool of 7 numbers for Québec and a pool of 10 for Western Canada for an extra CA$ 1 million draw per region.
Players can choose between playing Lotto Max and the regional games or both by indicating their choice on their betslip.
Loto-Québec is different to Lotto Max and Western Max because it is the only region out of all 5 regions that allows players to manually select all 3 sets on a board for CA$ 5. The other two regional games give players the option of selecting one set manually but the 2nd and 3rd set are generated randomly by the lottery terminal in the form of QuickPick.
Each region offers add-on games for an extra CA$ 1 for each game. There are different names for the add-on games such as Tag, Encore or Extra depending on the region. How the add-on games work is the terminal adds a 6- or 7-digit number to the ticket to win a top cash prize that ranges from CA$ 250 000 in Western Canada to CA$ 1 million in Ontario and Québec.

At the time, this big lotto win was the second-largest payout in Canada’s lottery history. It fell a few million short of the CA$ 63 million payout in 2013 on Lotto 6/49.
In June 2019, Lotto Max broke Lotto 6/49’s record when it paid out CA$ 60 million to a single ticket holder in Montreal.
Canada waited with bated breath at the start of 2020 as the Lotto Max jackpot reached CA$ 70 million for the first time ever. There’s a lucky winner out there in Canada whose life will change forever if his or her 7 lucky numbers match the drawn numbers in the next draw.

When does the Lotto Max draw take place?
Why Lotto Max draw times are different
When you mark the Quick Pick box on your betslip (or tell the cashier to select it), the lottery terminal automatically generates 6 random numbers for you for the draw.
The Quick Pick random number generator for a lottery draw game has no built-in memory. Once a set of numbers is picked for one play, the terminal resets itself to generate a fresh batch of completely random number for the next play.
Players generally opt to use Quick Pick because it saves them the bother of coming up with their own set of unique numbers.
With Lotto Max, you get three sets on a board for one play. The first set can be picked manually and the second and third set are selected by the terminal machine as if it’s a Quick Pick. You can opt to use Quick Pick to choose your 7 lucky numbers in the first set.
The Lotto Max jackpot was previously capped at CA$ 50 million but this limit was increased and the jackpot can roll over to a maximum of CA$ 70 million. The starting jackpot is CA$ 10 million and rolls over until there is a winner or the jackpot reaches CA$ 50 million.
The 7/7 jackpot cap is applied when the jackpot reaches this limit. Each CA$ 1 million that the jackpot rolls over the cap of CA$ 50 million is drawn as a separate CA$ 1 million payout known as MaxMillions prizes.
For each MaxMillions draw, 7 numbers are drawn from a pool of 1 to 50 numbers. To win a MaxMillions prize, a player must match all 7 lucky drawn numbers. If there is more than one winner, the MaxMillions cash prize is shared among the lucky winners.
Lotto Max with Combination Play
You can choose your own lucky numbers or use Combo Play Quick Pick. Combo Play also allows you to participate in up to 10 draws in advance.
With a Combo Play ticket, you win the same prizes as the regular game but because you have multiple game selections, you stand the chance of winning multiple prizes.
The way Combo Play works is you play the same way as if you have a single ticket but the lottery terminal adds two Quick Pick combinations to your ticket.
If you play ENCORE with Combo Play, you or the terminal adds one extra number for a chance to win the CS$250 000 top prize or CA$ second prize.
You can play 8- and 9-number Combination Plays. Each Combination Play is eligible for both the Lotto Max main draw and MaxMillions draws when they are held.
Lotto Max with ENCORE
For only CA$ 1, ENCORE offers you a chance to win CA$ 1 million. ENCORE gives you the chance to win the CA$250 000 top prize or CA$100 000 second prize on the Friday draw.
When you fill in a betslip for Lotto Max, ask the cashier where you buy your ticket to include ENCORE on Quick Picks. Otherwise, mark how many times you want to play ENCORE yourself. You can play it up to 10 times.
When you play Advance Play to multiply the number of times you participate in Lotto Max draws; you play ENCORE and your main game for each of the games’ draws.
You win with ENCORE by matching the drawn number between 1 and 10. You need to match the numbers drawn in order from left to right or right to left.
The minimum advertised (starting) jackpot for Lotto Max is CA$ 10 million. The jackpot rolls over to the next draw if no-one matches all 7 drawn numbers. The main jackpot is capped at CA$ 70 million.

What are MaxMillions prizes?
